New on DVD 5/29 - View on Film

Good Tuesday everyone!  The Tuesday after a Monday holiday is usually pretty light.......and today is no different.

Man on a Ledge-

Sorry, but I really do not like Sam Worthington.....and I'm not about to give him a shot with this one.  Rottentomatoes.com gives it a 31%.

 True Blood Season 4-

For those who need to catch up in time for the upcoming Season 5 premiere of True Blood can do so with this.  I've never seen an episode, but I'm told its good.  I've just had enough vampires for the time being.

Have a great week!

Snow White and the Huntsman for Friday.

New on DVD 5/22 - View on Film

Good Tuesday!  Another heavy week with smaller films.

This Means War-

This only came out 3 months ago, but I enjoyed it quite a lot.  The three leads are fun, and I had a good time at this live action cartoon.

Below is my original review.

The Woman in Black-

This is Daniel Radcliffe's first film after the Harry Potter Series ended.  It's a Gothic Horror story, that got a respectable 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Red Tails-

This was George Lucas' baby for many years.  He self produced the film about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all Black Air Force Squadron.  Rottentomatoes.com gives it a 35% approval, but I'm going to give it a look hopefully this week.

Sherlock Season 2 (BBC)-

And a fantastic series from England comes to DVD after being on PBS for the last three weeks.  This is a reimagining of Sherlock Holmes in modern day, and I think it is a super series.  It's only 3 episodes, but definitely worth your time!  The First Season is great too!

Have a great week!

First Teaser for New James Bond Film- Skyfall / View on Film

Skyfall Teaser-

Good Monday!  I'm a huge fan of the Daniel Craig 007, but I did not enjoy the last entry, Quantum of Solace.  Looking forward to the first Bond since MGM emerged from bankruptcy.

Enjoy and have a great week!

The Dictator-

Good Friday everyone!  He is the Kamikaze Comedian, Sasha Baron Cohen.  After the great Borat, and so-so Bruno, here's his satire The Dictator, where everyone is fair game.

Enjoy your weekend!

New on DVD 5/15 - View on Film

Good Tuesday everyone!  Big week of smaller movies this week.

The Grey-

The latest manly Liam Neeson film. Here, we have a plane crash, and the survivors battle to defy the odds against the wild.  RottenTomatoes.com gave it a solid 78%.

 Chronicle-

Three Teens in Seattle get Superpowers in another found footage (ie Paranormal Activity) movie...which gets a very solid 85% from RottenTomatoes.

One for the Money-

A movie starring Katherine Heigl that did decent in the theaters, when most thought it was going to bomb.  A very, very low 2% on RottenTomatoes.com.

Rampart-

Woody Harrelson seems to be happy being a supporting actor in big movies, and the star of smaller ones.  Here's another, when he plays a corrupt cop.  Rottentomatoes.com gives it 76%.

That's it for this week!

Cheers!

New on DVD May 8th - View on Film

Good Tuesday!  Here's what new this week.......

The Vow-

Ugh.  I really like both stars, but this romantic movie is an absolute downer!!  Didn't like it, hated the ending.....below is my review.

Underworld: Awakenings-

I have never actually seen any of the Underworld movies yet....and you'd think Kate Beckinsale in leather would be enough!

This is the fourth Underworld Film....and the Third with Kate.  It got a 29% from Rottentomatoes.com....but I think this is one of those critic proof films.

Have a great week!  Dark Shadows this Friday!

Cheers!

The Avengers - View on Film

The Avengers-

Holy Cow!  The be all, end all of movies is here.

Yes, I should be a even-keeled reviewer, but faithful reader, you must be told that this is what I've been waited for since a young boy.

Here's my review:

View on Film Extra- Why is this Important?

What makes the Avengers such a watershed moment for yours truly?  It started with my first comic book, Avengers 221.....and continued with a filmmaker who made us believe in Slayers, and that a Vampire could have a soul.

For some reason in my youth, one day I decided I needed to start reading super hero comics.  I was about 10 years old.  My Dad, who always wanted to help his son out, took me to a convenience store on the North side of Spokane Washington, and we got Avengers 221.  That was it.  Love at first sight!  So I got a subscription, which I would not recommend for anyone!  It was always slow and late.  So once that finally ended, I found the Comic Rack.  A comic oasis in Spokane.  There, I could finally get my Comics fix,  and the Avengers were always on the forefront of my purchases.  (I eventually started shopping at Merlyn's in Downtown Spokane....where I have shopped for about 25 years.  John Waite is the main man there.  I've known him longer than almost anyone else I know!  Free Comic Book Day is Tomorrow, May 5th....stop by and get some free stuff!)

So I became engrossed in the back history of the Avengers, and essentially had a ball doing it.  I've had some gaps in the 30 years since, but I've been a faithful reader for most of that time.

When the rumblings started about an actual Avengers movie coming to the screen, I asked myself who would I dream about directing it.  No kidding, there was only one name, Joss Whedon.  Damned if that's not exactly what happened.

Joss Whedon is a master as making groups cohesive and work in the TV and Film medium.  Just watch any of the shows he wrote/directed.  Buffy/Angel/Firefly all had the essential ingredients that would make the Avengers work.  Also, he has written an X-men comic for two years, so he obviously knew what Iron Man was what.  (Here's a Great Profile on Joss in GQ , and here's a look at his work from Rolling Stone)

So last night, the movie finally came.....and it was a combination of my love for the source material AND the filmmaker which has made it something special.  Listen, I love movies.  This is what I do.  And the Avengers is a reminder of why.

New Dark Knight Rises Trailer - View on Film

Here is most likely the final look at Dark Knight Rises until it's release in late April.  This does look good.  If you go see the Avengers this weekend, you'll likely see this again.

New on DVD May 1st - View on Film

Good Tuesday!  After a couple of weeks of slim pickings, we at least have some choice this week.  One I can recommend.  And, lest I forget....the Avengers is coming this weekend.  I honestly have been spitting nails waiting for this to come out!

Haywire-

I thought this film was a lot of fun.  It wasn't Shakespeare or anything, but it's a good little romp with a spy whose betrayed....and tries to get revenge.  Steven Soderbergh continues his artsy films here, and its one I enjoyed!  See my full review below.

New Year's Eve-

Hey!  Let's throw a bunch of stars together, rehash every plot from TV Shows, and make a movie!  Well, it may not be that bad, but this Holiday Stinker got 7% from Rottentomatoes.com.  And I don't understand why you do save this release, until the holiday season when people feeling festive may up the sales.  Oh well, you may want to skip this one.

Joyful Noise-

Two Stars I like, join in Joyful Noise.  Always have liked Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah.  This film only got 33% from Rottentomatoes.com, but I think if your a fan of music, you may want to give this a shot.

That's it!  Have a great week.....and you may see me in line for the Avengers multiple times this weekend!

Cheers!
